Apuan Alps

Since 2011 the Park has been recognized as one of Italy’s eleven UNESCO Global Geoparks, a recognition awarded internationally to territories endowed with a geological heritage of particular significance in terms of rarity, scientific quality and educational value. The Apuan Alps are a fascinating orographic complex, entirely within the territory of Tuscany, and divided between the provinces of Massa Carrara and Lucca. Their fame derives first and foremost from the richness of the subsoil, with its marbles, chasms, caves and about two hundred mineral species.

Porta Lake

Here, you can observe numerous migratory and resident bird species, which find refuge among the reeds and rushes surrounding the shores. The area is especially popular with birdwatchers due to the presence of species such as herons, ducks, coots, cormorants, teal, kingfishers, nightingales, magpies, woodpeckers, and bitterns. Porta Lake today is an ideal place for those who want to immerse themselves in nature, in a peaceful and quiet setting: on the approximately 4-km loop that runs along it, one passes through, on foot by bicycle or on the horses of the nearby riding stables, reed thickets, forests of willows, rushes and black alders, wet meadows and various streams.

Oasis Le Dune

Today this area hosts many native plant varieties from the Tyrrhenian and Ligurian coasts, increasingly rare due to the heavy human impact on shorelines. This biodiversity heritage has been recognized by numerous Italian universities, which have carried out studies and projects here aimed at preserving the environment.

Candia hills

At the foot of the Apuan Alps, a few kilometres from the city centre, lie the Candia Hills, the production area of the excellent Candia dei Colli Apuani DOC wine.
Vines have been grown here since ancient times. Along the Via dell’Uva, a wide panorama opens up, from the rows of vines embracing the whole city down to the coast.
Here lush vineyards stretch along steep terraced slopes overlooking the sea.
